EconData
A Source of Economic Time Series Data
from the University of Maryland
The EconData service of the University of Maryland makes
available several hundred thousand economic time series that have
been put in a standard, highly efficient, easy-to-use form for
personal computers (PCs) and made publicly available. These series
include various national accounts, labor information, price indices,
current business indicators and industrial production, information
over state and regions, and international data.
Subdirectories:
INSTRUCTIONS - This includes two file. CONTENTS.DOC
explains the files in EconData and explains the contents of those
files. GUIDE.DOC is the documentation for the econometric tools
used to process these economic time-series.
TOOLS - This subdirectory provides the essential tools for
using this data. The most important tool is PKUNZIP.EXE (or its
public domain alternatives, DEZIP or UNZIP) which allows you to
unarchive the data that you download from this system. The file
that contains the PKUNZIP.EXE program as well as other PKWARE is
called PKZ110.EXE. The process for dearchiving is explained in
GUIDE.DOC. This subdirectory also includes the PDG software
package, which is the public domain version of the G econometric
package. All of the data is in the form of banks for G and PDG.
DATA - This includes all of the economic time-series. The
data is broken up into International, State and Local, and U.S.
National data. You should consult CONTENTS.DOC to determine what
data each file contains.
Important Files:
If you plan to download any of these time-series, you must
"X-fer" or "Transfer" the following files to make the data useable:
In the EconData subdirectory:
README.DOC - This document, giving a short description of
EconData
In the Instructions subdirectory:
CONTENTS.DOC - A description of the subdirectories of
EconData and the files contained in those
subdirectories
GUIDE.DOC - An explanation of how to use these economic
time series.
In the Tools subdirectory:
PKZ110.EXE - An archive of the archival software used to
unarchive the files.
PDGARC.EXE - The public domain version of the G regression
package, necessary for using the data files.
PDGSUP.EXE - The supplementary programs for the G
regression package, used for making tables and
manipulating data.
Warning: Any file with a "DOC" extension is an ASCII file. Most
every other file is a binary file. A file with a "ZIP" extension
is an archived file using the PKZIP archival software. It will be
useless to you if you do not take the PKZ110.EXE file (or one of
its public domain alternatives).
